I’m sorry. DNF at only 19%. I hate doing this, but with this book, I had to.

It’s not the worst thing I’ve ever read, but, I just couldn’t get into it. Couldn’t enjoy it. We start with a premise that’s very like many YA books—a world in which there is a ruling class (the sols) and a lower, serving class (the dwellers). Our heroine, Willa, is a dweller chosen to serve the sols. It doesn’t matter if a book has a premise that many others do by any means. Not if it’s done well. It wasn’t done well here.

I couldn’t get on with Willa. She was frustrating. She was comically clumsy, and not comical in the way that the writers intended. She’s so childish, too. She doesn’t sound her age at all, and I honestly just hated hearing this story from her POV. None of the jokes were funny and she didn’t appear to have any actual concept of what was happening to her. She was also pretty judgy. And she gives us amazing descriptions like describing someone’s face as “sucky” or “cute-but-weird,” neither of which are meaningful. She was maddening.

The chain of events wasn’t working for me. The characters weren’t working for me. When I could tell them apart, that is. The humour definitely wasn’t working for me. I can see why there are a lot of people who enjoyed this book, but I’m afraid that I just wasn’t one of them. You can say that I can’t review if I haven’t finished if you like, but I’m just briefly trying to explain why I didn’t finish. And I HATE leaving books unfinished.

Won’t be finishing it. Won’t be looking at the rest of it. Just not my thing, I’m afraid.

Have you read this book? What were your thoughts? I’ve actually reconsidered finishing it since I posted this, so maybe check out my Goodreads to follow that story haha.
